This eyewitness account by the renowned mathematician Thomas Hariot (1560-1621) records the fate of Sir Walter Raleigh's 1585 colony at Roanoke Island. It was illustrated with engravings based on the eye-witness drawings of John White (d. 1593). Like many Europeans, Hariot and White admired the courage and ingenuity of Native Americans, but were puzzled by their unfamiliar customs.
